鹽害及乾旱是限制植物分佈和產量重要的因素,由於人類耕作大量施予無機肥,土壤中累積的鹽分漸漸提高造成鹽害,尤其以鈉鹽的累積影響最大。據估計全球三分之一以上的灌溉土地均有鹽害的問題存在,大部份的作物對鹽分均相當敏感,因此,如何減緩鹽分對作物的影響,使作物的耐鹽程度提高,是農業發展的重要課題之一。耐鹽植物能生長在含有較高的鹽分的土壤中,表示此類植物對鹽分的忍受能力較高,而高等植物的耐鹽機制是多途徑的,研究其耐鹽的相關機制,再應用至作物上,對提高作物對鹽份的耐受性應有助益。

目前本實驗室以耐鹽植物冰花為模式,進行一系列高等植物耐鹽性之分子機制研究。耐鹽植物冰花(Mesembryanthemum crystallinum; ice plant)是雙子葉一年生植物,幼苗時並不耐鹽,如遭遇乾旱、高鹽環境或發育至成熟階段時,會發生許多基因層次的變化,造成許多生理生化途徑之變化,以防止體內水分散失及離子毒害,適應環境的變化。冰花可生長於高鹽分(500 mM NaCl)的土壤中,且其耐鹽性可經由環境變化而誘導,並具有細胞層次的耐鹽性,是研究高等植物耐鹽機制的模式植物。目前研究高等植物的耐鹽機制有幾個方向:水分吸收,相容性溶質的累積,鈉離子區隔,以及鉀離子的平衡。近期研究乃針對鹽逆境下鉀離子的吸收做深入探討,但由於冰花不適合進行遺傳操作,故利用酵母菌及阿拉伯芥完備之遺傳系統同步進行相關基因功能之研究。
